The Sassetti family have been making wine in the charming Tuscan town of Montalcino for four generations, and Livio was actually one of the founding members of the prestigious Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino. Today the estate is run by Livio’s son, Lorenzo, and his wife Sabina who continue the family legacy by crafting handsome, powerful Brunellos that showcase the beauty of the estate’s vineyards. This is the family’s signature Brunello is crafted from top quality Sangiovese Grosso grapes which are carefully harvested by hand at the end of September. The fruit is then gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The final stage is 36 months of ageing in traditional 33 hectolitre Slavonian oak casks followed by another 6 months resting in the bottle. Classic Brunello notes of bright red cherry, dark berries and plum dominate on the nose, accompanied by hints of leather, dried Mediterranean herbs, and sweet spice. On the palate there’s a robust full body, intense core of dark fruit, and firm tannins that will help this magnificent wine age beautifully in the cellar.
