Founded in the mid-19th century in Rioja Alavesa, the Marqués de Riscal winery is a historic producer and the first to bottle its own wine in the region, back in 1862. The company, renowned worldwide for its excellent wines, works with approximately 890 hectares of vineyards. The XR is an emblematic wine that pays homage to all the winemakers who have contributed to the prestige of the Marques de Riscal winery throughout its long history. It stems from the practice, which lasted until the 1960s, of leaving some barrels of wine with unique characteristics, never released for sale, as part of the Historic Reserve as a reference for the head winemaker. A blend of Tempranillo and Graciano, the wine ages for approximately two years in American oak. In the glass, the XR Reserva reveals an intense, brilliant color with dark cherry tones. Its aromatic profile is complex and expressive, with initial notes of blackberry, plum, and cassis, followed by spicy and balsamic aromas, hints of licorice, and coffee. On the palate, it is concentrated and well-structured, flavorful and elegant, generous and juicy. It has ripe, soft tannins and a pleasant, refreshing acidity that balances the fruity character. The long, lingering finish evokes balsamic notes. Try it with roasted ham or roast pork belly.
